Jamaica Needs Our Help!

From JamLink.com:

JMF to assist Manchester Family

While overcoming challenges is part of the daily routine for many struggling families in Jamaica; one family in particular from Knockpatrick, now defunct bauxite district of Manchester is at rope’s end and in dire need of assistance.

Unable to pay the rent after falling several months behind, this family of seven will need to find another place to live or face eviction on April 30, 2010. I spoke directly with the landlord and was informed that while he expects full payment of the back-rent, an eviction order was filed with the courts and will remain in effect, citing the monthly property  mortgage as his foremost concern.

With sincere empathy for the landlord, I advised the family to defer payment until later when they are better able fulfill those obligations, since it would not deter eviction and the possibly of becoming homeless; and to use whatever charitable assistance we can provide towards a new place to live.

I am informed that it would cost approximately $250/month (USD) for suitable housing for the family, plus the typical rental deposit equaling the same.  Additionally, I am hopeful that relief fund equivalent to three months ($750) rent, would provide sufficient allowance for this family find meaningful income.

In responding to the plight of this Manchester family, we established the "Jamaica Matters Fund" (JMF) - a funding program to increase our capacity in dealing with the numerous disparities throughout Jamaica. The JMF Program will exist as an association among local partners and our non-profit arm, Vonergy Inc., a registered 501(c) (3) Charitable Organization - Federal Tax Identification:  57-1206488.

This Program will remain in perpetuity to facilitate community media and outreach throughout Jamaica.

And so, we are now appealing to the generosity of fellow Jamaicans and hereby ask for your tax-deductible contributions towards a $750 (USD) relief fund.  All monetary contributions are tax-deductible and will be posted on our website.  Please Click here to contribute via PayPal.

A Spring Break and Summer missions experience is yours in the beautiful country of Jamaica Mon! Over the past 17 years, literally hundreds of groups of high school and college students have assisted in construction and evangelism efforts in one of the poorest areas of Kingston, Jamaica.

Touring Kingston and Hanover Street

Tim Yarbrough, left, and Andy Morris, right, meet with Rev. Franklin Small during a tour of Kingston on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Tuesday was spent touring the City of Kingston and visiting Hanover Street Baptist Church, among other locations. Rev. Franklin Small serves as pastor of both Hanover Street and Gardener's View Baptist Churches in Kingston. Hanover is more than 180 years old and one of the historic Baptist churches in Kingston.

While much of this trip's discussion focused around the construction project at Gardener's View, there are evangelism and ministry opportunities planned for both churches during spring and summer projects.

Above is Rev. Small with children from a day school that is operated through Hanover Baptist in downtown Kingston.

Construction Discussion at Gardener's View

We arrived in Kingston on Monday and quickly got busy working with our Jamaica Baptist friends regarding plans for 2008 projects.

After a pleasant "catch up" lunch with Delores Facey and Stacy (Sister Jackie's daughter) at a local eatery, we were off with Patrick Facey to show Andy Gardener's View Baptist Church and the building work that needs to be done there.

The bottom level of the church's fellowship hall and proposed outreach center has been completed. Plans are to finish the decking (ceiling) of the building in preparation for the second floor's completion. Andy and I discussed with Patrick and Edward Manning of Gardener's View building committee the addition of several shower stalls which would be used by volunteer teams coming to Jamaica to do future mission work.

Construction work to the church building would be done in addition to evangelism outreach efforts such as VBS, music workshops, etc., that missions teams would be involved in during 2008.

Mr. Manning worked extensively with Rev. Mark Olson during previous construction work performed on the structure. Mark and his teams were instrumental in completing important work at the building which included the church's roof.

Discussions with Mr. Facey and Rev. Franklin Small continued today. Continue for pray for our efforts here and for God to be glorified in all that is done!

Below, Mr. Manning, left, Andy Morris, center, and Mr. Facey pray for God's guidance in the construction efforts at Gardener's View church.

Planning for 2008 Jamaica Efforts Underway

Please continue to pray for efforts in Jamaica, as plans for 2008 are beginning to take shape!

A conference call was held recently with Rev. Small, Andy Morris of Serve Management Group, and myself, to discuss 2008 plans. Serve will be taking the lead on organizing mission trips and enlisting volunteers for various Spring Break and summer opportunities.

Andy and I will be returning to Jamaica in October to meet with Rev. Small and church leadership to make plans which will include evangelism, music training, Bible schools, street crusades and possibly construction at Gardener's View church.

You may recall that Andy and I worked together many years ago in Memphis, Tennessee, during the launch of World Changers. Andy is now executive director of Serve Management Group, which mobilizes students and adults to participate in numerous North American and international projects.

Please pray specifically for:
  • God to continue to open doors for the work in Jamaica
  • God to prepare the hearts of those who will get the opportunity to receive the gospel during 2008 efforts.
  • Volunteers to be raised up to do the work in Jamaica
  • Preparation and planning for 2008 efforts
If you have additional questions, please email me.
